The Benefits Of A Low Cholesterol Hdl Ratio Reading

A healthy cholesterol hdl ratio level is important, especially if you have a high number in your reading to avoid the risk of contracting many different types of heart disease (namely heart attacks and strokes). An hdl cholesterol reading of less than 40 mg/dl for men and 50 mg/dl for women increases your risk of heart disease dramatically. There are many factors which can lower your cholesterol hdl level. The three major factors include smoking, being overweight and getting minimum exercise everyday.

Essentially, one must be at a healthy body weight in order to maintain good hdl cholesterol. You can achieve this by cutting calories, being especially conscious of the fat content in your calories. Bulking up your diet to include whole grains, low fat dairy and plenty of heart healthy fruits and vegetables can help you to achieve a proper cholesterol reading. Exercise is also key to keeping your weight off and your cholesterol level down. Doctors and dieticians recommend that you get at least 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise at least 5 days out of the week, but preferably 7 days. That may simply mean walking somewhere instead of driving, or using the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Every little bit helps when you are trying to boost your diet.

Cutting out smoking and all nicotine habits is crucial if you want to have a low cholesterol hdl ratio. Smoking builds up bad cholesterol in the linings of your heart, drastically increasing your risk at a much earlier age for heart disease. In addition to deciding to quit smoking, you should also lower the amount of alcoholic beverages you intake. A glass of wine a couple of times a week is not going to be detrimental to your health (in fact you may find that it relaxes you), however, daily consumption of alcoholic beverages (especially ones with a high fat and high sugar content) can increase your long term risk of contracting some sort of heart disease. Lowering your cholesterol in many cases can be a total lifestyle change, but if you put your mind to it, you can literally add years to your life that would normally be cut short by the unhealthy lifestyle choices you previously made.
